BEFORE YOU SPEND MORE MONEY ON META ADS, READ THIS.
If your ads aren’t giving you the results they used to, I don’t want your first reaction to be “let me increase the budget.”
Let’s slow down and look at the campaign properly.
Because there are a few things I’d check before putting another ₦1 into it.
⸻
FIRST, TELL ME WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT THE AD TO DO.
Do you want people to buy?
Message you on WhatsApp?
Book a service?
Visit your website?
Or are you simply trying to get more people to discover your brand?
Be specific.
Because “I want more customers” isn’t enough to build a campaign around.
If the goal is sales, the entire journey should be built around getting the right person to purchase.
If the goal is WhatsApp enquiries, then your ad, CTA and customer journey should make starting that conversation as easy as possible.
Know the action you want before you start building the campaign.
⸻
NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE PEOPLE YOU’RE SHOWING THE AD TO.
If you don’t have much customer data yet, don’t overcomplicate this.
Start with the audience you actually understand.
You know who your product is for. You know the problem you’re solving. You know what kind of person is most likely to need it.
Start there.
But if you’ve already been running ads, you probably have more information than you realise.
People have watched your videos.
People have visited your profile.
People have clicked your website.
People have messaged you.
Those people are telling you something.
Don’t throw that information away and start from scratch every time you launch another campaign.
⸻
AND IF PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT FROM YOU, PAY ATTENTION TO THAT.
Your past customers are some of the most useful data you have.
Look at the people who actually converted.
What do they have in common?
What kind of people were responding to your ads?
What products were they buying?
Where were they coming from?
Then use that information to build your Custom Audiences and, when you have enough quality data, test Lookalike Audiences.
You’re no longer asking Meta to find just anybody.
You’re giving it a clearer idea of the kind of person who has already shown you that they’re willing to buy.
⸻
NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE.
If every ad you’re running is basically:
“Our product is available.”
“Buy now.”
“Send us a DM.”
Please stop and rethink the message.
Your customer is not sitting on Instagram waiting for your advert.
They’re scrolling.
So give them something that makes them stop.
Talk about the problem they’re dealing with.
Show them something they didn’t know.
Tell a story.
Show the product being used.
Answer the question they keep asking.
Show another customer’s experience.
Then bring the product into the conversation.
Your creative should give them a reason to care before you give them a reason to buy.
⸻
AND PLEASE, DON’T TEST EVERYTHING AT ONCE.
If you have a small budget, you cannot afford to scatter it everywhere.
Five audiences.
Six creatives.
Three ad sets.
Different objectives.
Different budgets.
Then you’re sitting there wondering why nothing is getting enough data.
Keep your test focused.
Change one or two things at a time.
Give the campaign enough room to show you something.
Then look at the results and decide what deserves more money.
Testing isn’t about spending more. It’s about learning before you scale.
⸻
NOW, WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SOMEONE CLICKS?
This is where I want you to actually follow the customer.
Someone sees your ad.
They click.
Then what?
Do they land on a page that immediately tells them what to do?
Can they find the product easily?
Can they ask questions?
Can they pay?
Or do they have to click around five different places before they figure out how to buy?
Because sometimes the ad is doing its job and the customer journey is the problem.
Make the next step obvious.
If WhatsApp is where you normally close sales, take them there.
If your website converts better, take them there.
Just don’t make people work unnecessarily hard to become your customer.
⸻
AND DON’T FORGET THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T BUY THE FIRST TIME.
Someone clicked your ad and left.
Someone watched your video but didn’t enquire.
Someone visited your website but didn’t purchase.
That doesn’t automatically mean they’re gone forever.
They’ve already shown interest.
That’s where your retargeting comes in.
And your retargeting ad shouldn’t just be the same ad they already saw.
Give them something else.
Maybe they need proof.
Maybe they need an answer to an objection.
Maybe they need to understand the offer better.
Maybe they just need one more reason to finally take action.
Meet them where they are.
⸻
FINALLY, STOP GUESSING.
This is where your data becomes important.
Don’t just ask:
“Did the ad perform?”
Ask:
Did people stop to watch?
Did they click?
Did they enquire?
Did they actually buy?
Because these tell you different things.
If people are watching but not clicking, look at your message.
If they’re clicking but not buying, look at the offer and customer journey.
If they’re buying but the cost is too high, then you have a different problem to solve.
The number you’re looking at should tell you what to investigate next.
⸻
SO BEFORE YOU PUT MORE MONEY INTO YOUR ADS…
Look at the entire journey.
Who are you talking to?
What are you saying to them?
What happens when they respond?
What happens when they don’t buy?
And what is your data telling you?
That’s how you stop treating Meta ads like “put money here and hope.”
You start treating them like a system you can actually understand, test and improve.
